Gabriel Name Meaning
English Scottish French German Spanish Portuguese Romanian Polish Czech Slovak Slovenian West Indian (mainly Haiti) African (mainly Nigeria and Tanzania) and Jewish; Hungarian (Gábriel): from the Hebrew personal name Gabri’el composed of the elements geber ‘man’ and El ‘God’ hence ‘man of God’. This was borne by an archangel in the Bible (Daniel 8:16 and 9:21) who in the New Testament announced the impending birth of Jesus to the Virgin Mary (Luke 26–38). It has been a comparatively popular personal name in all parts of Europe among both Christians and Jews during the Middle Ages and since (compare Michael and Raphael ). In North America the English form of the surname has absorbed cognates from other languages e.g. Slovenian Gabrijel and also their patronymics and other derivatives e.g. Slovenian Gabrijelčič Greek Gabrielis and Gabrielidis.
