German Jewish (Ashkenazic) Danish and English: nickname for a lively and cheerful person or in the case of the Jewish name an artificial name from Middle High German vinke Middle English and Yiddish fink ‘finch’ (see Finch and Vink).

The surname of German origin is also found in some central European countries for example in Czechia Slovenia and Croatia often as a translation into German of corresponding Slavic nicknames or surnames.

In part this is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar).
