Southern Italian: possibly a variant of Fato, a short form of Bonifato (see Bonifacio), but more likely a nickname from fata, meaning ‘fairy’ in standard Italian or ‘praying mantis’ in Calabrian dialect. Hungarian (Fáta): from the old pagan personal name Fáta.
