Possibly also English: according to Reaney, a nickname composed of Old English fæger ‘fair’ + hine ‘servant’ or an occupational name from Old English fearr ‘bull’ + hine, i.e. ‘bull keeper’. Possibly also German: from Middle High German var(r)e ‘(young) bull’, ‘steer’.
