Hungarian (Dankó); Czech and Slovak (also Daňko); Ukrainian and Slovenian: from a pet form of the personal name Daniel (Hungarian Dániel Ukrainian Danylo Slovenian Danijel) or of any of the Slavic compound personal names formed with the element dan ‘given’ (see Dana ). Slovenian: status name for a tithe-free peasant who had his own land from archaic dan ‘tax levy’. In North America this surname may also be an altered form of the variant Dajnko.
