Possibly an Americanized spelling of French Corde, from Old French corde ‘string’, ‘rope’ (Latin c(h)orda, from Greek khorde), a metonymic occupational name for a maker of cord or string, or a nickname for a habitual wearer of decorative ties and ribbons. Dutch: variant of Kort ‘short’.
