Italian: from gonfalone ‘standard banner’ from Old French gonfalon (of ancient Germanic origin) a metonymic occupational name for a standard bearer either in a military context or as the officer of a guild responsible for carrying the banner in religious processions. It was also a title borne by mayors of the Florentine republic and by other magistrates designated more specifically as gonfalonieri di giustizia ‘officers of justice’ gonfalonieri della chiesa ‘officers of the church’ etc.
