from Brokenborough (Wilts) which is recorded as Brokeneberga in 1156 or from Brokenborough a lost place in Almondsbury (Gloucs) which is recorded as Brokenburgh in 1421 and Brockenbrow in 1729. The Wilts place-name derives from Old English brocen ‘broken uneven’ + beorg ‘hill’. The Gloucs place-name may have the same etymology or it may be a manorial name derived from the Wilts surname.
