Compare Bouvier . German (Böff): from a short form of an ancient Germanic personal name with bod- (Old Saxon bodo ‘messenger’) as in Bodo . French (Alsace and Lorraine): of German origin a variant of Böff (see 2 above) or perhaps Buff . This form of the surname is virtually non-existing in Germany.
