English and Irish (of Norman origin): from Middle English bacinet (Norman French bassinet) ‘hemispherical helmet without a visor worn under the fighting helmet; also (later) a pointed helmet with a visor’ denoting someone who wore or made headgear of this kind. The name was prominent in Dublin throughout the 16th century but is now found mainly in Liverpool England.
