Yarmouth Family History

Yarmouth Surname Meaning

From Great Yarmouth (Norfolk) and adjacent Little Yarmouth in Gorleston (Suffolk) recorded as Gernemwa Gernemutha in 1086. The place-name derives from the river Yare (of uncertain origin) + Old English mūða ‘river mouth estuary’. Possibly also from Yarmouth (IoW) which is recorded as Ermvd in 1086 and Ernemuth in 122.

The place-name derives from Old English *ēaren ‘gravelly muddy’ + mūða ‘river mouth estuary’. However, no evidence for such a surname has been found in IoW documents in either the medieval or post-medieval period.
