Americanized form of Slovenian, Croatian, Polish, Slovak, and Czech Janko and of Hungarian Jankó. In some cases it may also be an American shortened (and altered) form of the Ukrainian and Belorussian patronymic Yankovich and its Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian, and Slovak cognates (compare Yank).

Ukrainian: from a pet form of the personal name Yan, predominantly West Slavic (see Jan) equivalent of John. Americanized form of Slovenian Jenko.
