From Yalding (Kent), which is recorded as Alding' in 1161–2, Ealding' in 1207, and Yaldyng in 145. The place-name means ‘(settlement of) the people of a man called Ealda’ deriving from the Old English personal name Ealda + the group-name suffix -ingas.
