Wyncoll Family History
Wyncoll Surname Meaning
Perhaps from Winkhill (in Heckington Lincs) which is recorded as Wynkel in 1289. The place-name is thought to derive from Old English *wincel ‘nook corner bend in a river’ which could give both winkel and winchel in Middle English.
A derivation from Old English *wince + hyll ‘hill at a bend’ is an alternative possibility.
Compare Winkle.
