Wride Family History
Wride Surname Meaning
Americanized form of North German Wriedt. English: perhaps a nickname for someone with a twisted body from having a crooked neck, back, or legs from Middle English wrid(e) wrede.
This term is recorded only in names and seems to imply an Old English noun wride ‘twist, bend’, derived from Old English wrīthan ‘to twist, to writhe’. Its sense development to ‘the twisted (one)’ may have been influenced by Middle English wried ‘crooked, bent, twisted’, past participle of wrien ‘to writhe, be crooked (etc.)’.
Alternatively, a post-medieval variant of Read.
