The placenames derive from Old English wyrt ‘plant, vegetable’ + tūn ‘farmstead, estate’ (i.e. a kitchen garden), except for Nether and Over Worton (Oxfordshire), which derives from Old English ōra ‘edge, ridge’ + tūn.
