Winterflood Surname Meaning
Apparently from a lost place likely to have been in Essex named with Old English winter ‘winter’ + flōde ‘water channel’ for a stream which only flows or flows more rapidly during the winter.
This type of place-name has analogies in the many places named with Old English winter-burna ‘winter stream’ such as Winterborne (Dorset), Winterbourne (Berks, Wilts), and Winterburn (WR Yorks) (see Winterburn).
