Dutch: from Middle Dutch wint ‘wind’, applied as a topographic or habitational name referring to a house or tavern named with this word, for example In de Vier Winden ('In the Four Winds'). Alternatively, perhaps a reference to hazewind ‘greyhound’ similarly used.
