Wimbleton Family History

Wimbleton Surname Meaning

From Wimbledon (Surrey) which is recorded as Wimeldon in 1202 and Wymbelton in 1348. The etymology of the place-name is uncertain; it may derive from the Old English personal name Winebeald + Old English dūn ‘hill’.

Alternatively, it may be from an Old English personal name *Wynnman + dūn, reduced to Wimendon. This was then changed to Wimeldon due to Anglo-Norman influence.

Eventually, it further evolved into Wimbeldon with the addition of an intrusive -b-.
