Greek: variant of Vlachakis, a patronymic from Vlachos, an ethnic name for an Aromanian or Vlach used also as a nickname meaning ‘highlander’.

It includes the diminutive suffix -akis, which is particularly typical for the surnames from Crete, where it was adopted massively in the 19th century.

In Crete, there is no indigenous Aromanian population, so the secondary sense is undoubtedly more frequent in this instance.
