American shortened form of Serbian Vasiljević, Macedonian Vasilevski, or any other Slavic patronymic from local equivalents (Serbian Vasilije and Vasilj, Macedonian Vasil, etc.) of the Greek personal name Basileios ‘royal’ (see Basil).
