Americanized form of North German Uthmann: nickname from Middle Low German ūtman ‘stranger newcomer’. Muslim (mainly Nigeria): from the Arabic personal name ʿUthmān of unexplained etymology.

This was the name of the third of the ‘rightly guided’ caliphs (ruled 644–56). Compare Othman and Usman.
