Twibell Family History
Twibell Surname Meaning
Apparently a nickname from Middle English twibil (Old English twibill) ‘axe with two cutting edges’ ‘two-bladed carpenter's tool’ or ‘mattock’ but this is no more than a linguistic coincidence since DNA analysis has confirmed the documentary evidence that it is a variant of Quibell.
For the change of Qu- to Tw- compare Twelftree as a variant of Queldrik for the name Weldrick.
