Indian (northern states): Brahmin name from Sanskrit trivedī ‘person who knows the three Vedas’ from tri- ‘three’ + veda ‘(sacred) knowledge’. The Vedas are the oldest sacred texts of the Hindu religion.

Three of them are regarded as primary but a fourth one was added later.
