Tregenza Family History
Tregenza Surname Meaning
From a lost place called Tregenza recorded as Tregensith in 1327 in the vicinity of Higher Tregonjohn Farm in Creed (Cornwall) around OS grid reference SW 941476.
The place-name is from Cornish tre ‘estate farmstead’ + probably an unrecorded Old Cornish personal name *Kensyth with mutation of k to g after the feminine word tre.
The earliest spellings of the place-name and the surname preclude derivation from Cornish kensa ‘first foremost’.
