From an unrecorded Middle English personal name Tot(te) representing either Old English Tot(t)a (of uncertain origin) or Old Scandinavian Tóti, which is probably a pet form of Old Scandinavian Þorsteinn (see Thurstan). See also Totty, Tutt, and compare Sabyna Tottedoghter' 1379 in
Some early bearers may belong with (2) or (3). From Middle English tot(te), meaning ‘simpleton fool’. See Tote. Perhaps also a variant of Tutt.
