Tipping Family History

Tipping Surname Meaning

English (Lancashire and West Midlands): from a Middle English and Old English personal name Tipping, a pet form of Old English Tippa, for which there is evidence in placenames such as Tiptree but which is of uncertain origin. See Tipp.

From the Middle English personal name Tipun or Tipin, diminutives of the personal name Tipp or Tibb (see Tibbs). The name was probably later absorbed by Tipping, Tippin, and Tippen.

Sometimes apparently a variant of Topping, or perhaps the names were confused.
