Thring Family History

Thring Surname Meaning

Variant of Dring (Middle English dreng threng) which is recorded in medieval Devon and Somerset. Interchange of /d/ and /ð/ is an occasional feature of southern-western dialects of English. However in the case of Richard Thring 1600 John Dring 1697 in IGI (Fugglestone Saint Peter Wilts) and Thomas Thring 1723 Mary Dring 1744 in IGI (Bedminster Somerset), the later form shows the common dialectal development of /ðr/ to /dr/ in SW England rather than the survival of Middle English /dr/.

See Tring. However, the preposition in the 1275 form may be in error for the French definite article le, and the name may belong with (1).
