Japanese: written 丹波 ‘red waves’ taken from the ancient province of Tamba in modern times divided between Kyōto and Hyōgo prefectures. A few families use different characters in place of the second one such as 場 (‘place’) 葉 (‘leaves’) or 馬 (‘horse’) and the name is also often Romanized as Tanba.
