English:: from the Middle English personal name Sired Siret (Old English Sigerǣd from sige ‘victory’ + rǣd ‘counsel’). Occasionally perhaps from the Middle English female personal name Sireth Sigrith (Old Norse Sigríthr Sighrīth from sigr ‘victory’ + fríthr ‘beautiful’).

Available post-medieval evidence suggests that in the northern counties Syrett Sirret etc. are late variants of Sarratt.
