Sudbury Family History

Sudbury Surname Meaning

English:: habitational name from any of the three places called Sudbury (Derbyshire, Middlesex, Suffolk) or from Sudborough (Northamptonshire), all of which are named with Old English sūth ‘south, southern’ + burg ‘fortified place’ or ‘manor’. Habitational name from Chipping, Little, or Old Sodbury (Gloucestershire).

The placename derives from an Old English personal name Soppa (genitive Soppan) + Old English burg ‘fortress’. This surname does not appear to have survived unless Sobey is an altered form of it, but this is quite uncertain.
