German: variant of Strützel a metonymic occupational name for a baker from Middle High German strützel ‘bread from fine flour’. This is also a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar).

Germanized form of Slovenian Štricelj itself of German origin (see 1 above).
