Compare Ricardo Stote 1327 in Subsidy Rolls (Wimborne Minster Dorset) with John Stout 1769 in IGI (Wimborne Minster Dorset); and Richard Stote 1332 in Subsidy Rolls (Lympstone Devon) with Agnes Stout 1692 in IGI (Lympstone Devon).

However, in modern times Stote and Stoat(e) are the predominant forms in the SW. Alternatively from Middle English stote ‘stoat’.
