English: variant of Stothard an occupational name for a keeper of cattle or horses from Middle English stot ‘steer bullock’ or ‘horse’ + herd(e) ‘herdsman’.

The name was probably confused with Stodeherd ‘keeper of stud-horses’ (see above).
