From Sockburn (Durham) which is recorded as Socceburg in about 1050, Sockburn in about 1130, and Sockeburne in 1268. The place-name derives from an Old English personal name *Socca + burg ‘fortified place’ (dative byrig).

With substitution of the second element by Middle English burn(e) ‘stream’ (Old English burna). The -t- in the surname is intrusive.
