Croatian (almost exclusively Štimac) and Slovenian (Štimac) is a nickname derived from štimati (also stimati), which means ‘to esteem, to appreciate,’ but also ‘to boast’ and ‘to court girls.’ Thus, it probably denotes a boaster or a courtier.

Alternatively, the name could come from South German Stimmer or directly from German bestimmen, meaning ‘to determine, to value.’ This interpretation suggests a connection to a taxer or a valuer (of damage).

As a Slovenian surname, Štimac is a dialect or imported variant of Štimec.
