Stanbury Family History

English (Devon):: habitational name primarily from Stanborough in Halwell (Devon) or perhaps Stanbury in Morwenstow (Cornwall) but also from Stanbury and Stainborough (both Yorkshire). Stanbury in Yorkshire derives from Old English stān ‘stone rock’ + burg ‘fortress’ while Stainborough in Yorkshire derives from Old English stān later replaced by Old Norse steinn ‘stone rock’ + Old English burg.

The etymology of the Cornwall placename is uncertain due to a lack of medieval forms though it may have the same origin as Stanbury in Yorkshire. For the etymology of the Devon placename see Stanbrough.
