Spreckley Family History
Spreckley Surname Meaning
Possibly from Spreakley in Frensham (Surrey), which is recorded as Sprakele in 1225 and derives from Old English sprǣc ‘shoot twig’ + lēah ‘wood woodland clearing’; however, the distribution of the known bearers does not support this origin.
Perhaps from Middle English sprakli ‘lively sprightly’, in which case the 1379 and 1381 spellings show alteration of weakly stressed /li/ to /lei/ or /lɛ:/.
This change may have occurred through association with the place-name endings -ly, -le(y), -lay.
