South German: topographic name for a person living on a lake from Middle High German sēwaere ‘lake dweller’. French and Walloon: variant of Sohier from the ancient Germanic personal name Sigiheri, a compound of sigi ‘victory’ + heri ‘army’.

It is also found in Britain including in the Channel Islands, where it is in part of Huguenot origin.
