From Middle English snart, recorded in the sense ‘painful smarting’ but probably meaning ‘quick sharp’ when applied to people. It is a borrowing of Old Scandinavian snart, the neuter form of snarr ‘swift; bold; keen’.

From the Old Scandinavian personal name Snǫrtr, Snart is recorded in England only in the Lincs place-name Snarford.

Snarford is recorded as Snertesforde in the 1086 Domesday Book. The personal name is derived from the form of the adjective in (i).
