Cornish: habitational name from any of various minor places called with Cornish skaw ‘elder bush’ + the locative suffix -es notably Skewes in Crowan, Cury, and Saint Wenn.

Alternatively, it may be derived from the loss of the initial syllable from Treskewes in either Stithians or Saint Keverne (all Cornwall).

The forms Skuse and Scuse are now mainly found in the Bristol area.
