from one or more places named with Old Scandinavian skáli ‘temporary shelter’ + horn ‘horn-shaped piece of land’ such as Skeleron in Rimington (WR Yorks) recorded as Skelhorn in 1616.
Skellorn Green in Adlington (Cheshire) may be an alternative source although it is only recorded from the 19th century and may have taken its name from the family.
The medieval field names Skeylhornrudyng 1315 and Skelhornes Ruding 1330 are recorded in Odd Rode (Cheshire).
