Sipos Family History

Hungarian (rarely Sípos): occupational name for a musician from sípos ‘piper’, a derivative of síp ‘whistle’. This surname is also found in Romania and Slovakia (see also below).

Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian, and Slovak (Šipoš, Slovak also Šípoš): archaic or dialect occupational name for a piper or a musician in general from šipoš, a loanword from Hungarian. In part, Šipoš and Šípoš are Slavicized forms of the Hungarian surname (see above).

Jewish (from Hungary; rarely Sípos): adoption of the name in 1 above either as a Hungarian calque of the formerly used German-based surname or because the Hungarian surname (or word) has some sounds in common with the original surname.
