from Silverton (Devon) which is recorded as Sulfretona in 1086, Seluerton in 1179, and Sylferton in 1356. The place-name may derive from Old English sulh ‘gully’ or syle ‘bog miry place’ + ford ‘shallow place by which water can be crossed ford’ + tūn ‘farmstead estate’.
Alternatively, it may take its name from a stream named with Old English seolfor ‘silver’ + Old English tūn.
