English: nickname apparently from an unrecorded Middle English shiming (Old English sciming) ‘bright attractive person’ a derivative of the Old English root scim- ‘shine’ (compare the verb shimmer) + the noun-forming suffix -ing.

The word may also have been used as a personal name.
