Unexplained but of northern European probably Dutch origin. It has been tentatively suggested that it may have a connection with the Dutch group Sgroot, Schroot, Schrooten, Schroten, Schroeten with the English vowel breaking up the Dutch initial cluster pronounced /sx-/.
