As a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola, Slovenia (see Kocevar), and at least in part also as an Austrian surname, it developed from Slovenian žagar ‘sawyer’ (see Zagar, compare 2 below).

Dutch: habitational name for someone from Schagen, North Holland.
