Irish and Scottish: either a shortened Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Scalaidhe ‘son of Scalaidhe’ a personal name meaning ‘crier roarer’ or else a variant of Scolaidhe ‘scholar’ (compare Scully).

Owing to loss of mac there has been confusion between the two names; compare Miskelly.
