Norwegian (Sandø): older form of Sandøy a habitational name from any of about fifteen farmsteads so named from Old Norse Sandey a compound of sand ‘sand’ + ey ‘island’.

Swedish (Sandö): ornamental adoption of Japanese: written 三戸 ‘three doors’. It is not common in Japan.

Japanese (Sandō): written with various characters possible meanings being 三藤 ‘three wisteria’ or 山東 ‘east of the mountains’. It is not common in Japan.
