Norwegian: habitational name from a common farm name in eastern Norway. The first element is most likely rogn ‘rowan tree’ but in names from the Middle Ages it can also be the female personal name Ragna, a short form of Old Norse names beginning with Ragn- ‘advice decision’.

The second element is Old Norse stathir, plural of stathr ‘farmstead dwelling’. Compare Rongstad.
